Forest Profiles

The hardwood forest and conifer swamp area are remnants of the original forest cover. Before any management of those woodlots begins we first need to know the condition of them. Current data on species composition, size distribution and density when compared to standards or characteristics of sustainable forests will provide direction and a priority of management activities. Other information regarding the presence and needs of existing fauna will also be required to develop targets for forest management but that will be the focus of another project

Three 100ft transects in the hardwood forest to the north and a conifer forest along the bog walk were surveyed early in 2007.

The Quarter Point Method was used.

Smith, R.L. 1996. Ecology and Field Biology, 5th Ed. Harper Collins

  • A 100 foot transect was run through a section of woodlot.
  • Eight intersects along the transect were selected at various distances (selected from a random number table) from the origin.
  • In each quarter of each intersect the distance of the nearest tree from the intersect was recorded, its diameter was measured and species noted. Each tree was assigned a unique number for future measurements.
  • The data were tabulated and summarized to generate the figures above that characterize the relative number and dominance of each species and their respective size distributions.
